New media refers to communication that is carried out through the use of network-based electronic tools that allow anybody to publish content online. One of the advantages of new media is that it offers a person easy access to publishing tools that help him cover a wider range of readers. Social networking websites like MySpace and Facebook allow free sharing of information and ideas, and open up greater avenues and opportunities for communication. Two people from opposite sides of the world may share their ideas on a daily basis without having to travel for miles.
Some examples of new media are multimedia CD-ROMs, websites, blogs and wikis, Email and attachments, and interactive television.
Gauging the effectiveness of new media through evaluation or analyses is called media metrics. It allows a person, or a group, to determine the level of influence and the performance of a particular media by conducting a study or a survey of sorts. To be able to do this well, one must first identify what data or information has to be collected. A systematic way of carrying out the task must also be realized.
Specific or detailed information about the company, like services offered and what sets it apart from other media companies, is likewise an important pre-requisite. In studying a media site, one should consider factors like the number of page views, frequency of visitors and number of site visits, posts, comments, threads, and ideas shared. These little details will help determine how a particular media site has performed.
As technology continuously evolves, new media will also continue to develop. This can only mean good news, as it will give people better ways to explore new and existing mediums of communication.
